I work in an integrated manner within a psychoanalytic framework. My style is person centred and informed by attachment theory and the psycho-neurobiology of brain development. I acknowledge the unique challenges faced by clients across the lifespan in today’s socially isolated, fast paced and technologically advanced world.
The long-term evidence-base of the following components of successful psychotherapy inform my treatment approach -
1) The quality of the therapist/client relationship as the main contributing factor for long-term recovery
2) Affective experience, exploration of defenses, therapeutic alliance, developmental transitions, interpersonal relations, and unconscious processes
Eating disorders present extremely challenging scenarios for sufferers and clinicians; challenges that must be acknowledged and navigated in treatment. These include ego-syntonicity, medical complications, shame, major societal contributors, psychological dichotomies and many contradictions!
Eating disorders are clever and complex safety systems sufferers use for managing emotions but are also hugely damaging and can present extreme physical and psychological risks, thus generally requiring a multi-disciplinary treatment team approach.
Treatment cannot be rushed, should always be focused on helping clients get back in rhythm with their bodies, and be non-shaming/non-blaming and compassionate.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" FOR HUMAN BODIES
NOR IS THERE A "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" TREATMENT APPROACH FOR EATING DISORDERS
My Background
I am a Counselling Psychologist.
I studied Psychology at Curtin University in WA and hold a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) degree with Honours, and a Master of Psychology (Counselling Psychology).
I have worked in private practice for 11 years, and prior to this, as a grief, loss and trauma counsellor in the women’s judicial system, with adolescents at Head Space in a short-term capacity, and with clients of all ages at the Rockingham Kwinana Division of General Practice.
I have a special interest in the treatment of Binge Eating Disorder and work within a HAES framework.
